TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Wahid Institute Director Yenny Wahid, said that the government must protect the rights of Gerakan Fajar Nusantara (Gafatar) as long as they do not intend to overthrow the legitimate government and are not involved in crimes and violence.
According to Yenny, belief is the right of everyone. "State or society cannot force their will on [Gafatar members]," said Yenny on Wednesday, January 27, 2016..
Yenny said Gafatar members' refusal to be picked up by their families shows strong emotional bond between the members. "Even if they will be forcibly picked up, they will find they way back to their group," said Yenny.
Yenny added that the members who wish not to return are adults, not children. "As long as they don't commit crime or plan terrorism, people must respect their choices," Yenny said.
Yenny asserted that people panicked and worried because Gafatar is considered to be defiant. Meanwhile, according to Yenny, people should not worry or panic because when people are panicking, violence will emerge. "What people can do is strengthen their faith and belief," Yenny said.
Yenny also pointed out that the issue related to Gafatar should be addressed through dialogues and discussions. "Belief cannot be changed through intimidation, but they can be changed through soft approach," said Yenny.
