TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Suhartono, a language expert from Universitas Negeri Surabaya (Unesa), argued that Bahasa Indonesia has the potential to be nominated as the language of ASEAN during the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) era.
"There are two languages that can be the language of ASEAN, Bahasa Indonesia and Malay," Suhartono said as quoted by Antara on Friday, January 8, 2016.
However, Suhartono is confident that Bahasa Indonesia has the greatest potential based on four scientific arguments. "These arguments are: Bahasa Indonesia had been studied in many countries, easy to master, rapidly developing, and most words in Bahasa Indonesia also exists in other ASEAN languages," Suhartono said.
Suhartono admitted that Bahasa Indonesia is not well-distributed as Malay, which exists in Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam, South Thailan, and South Philippines. Nevertheless, Indonesian themselves has constituted 60 percent of Bahasa Indonesia user in ASEAN.
Speaking on the same note, Unesa Rector Warsono supported government effort to negotiate with ASEAN member states in an attempt to promote Indonesia as the language of ASEAN.
