TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo called for the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) to maintain their independence and be free from political power. KPK’s independence must be maintained through professionalism, credibility, transparency and accountability,” said Jokowi in his speech during the new KPK building’s inauguration on Tuesday, December 29.
According to Jokowi, independence will be KPK’s strength in facing various challenges. KPK must also synergize with other law enforcement agencies, which are the police and the attorney general’s office. Corruption eradication needs support from both institutions.
Jokowi said sectoral ego has been hindering efforts in eradicating corruption. “All must synergize because there is only one goal, which is eradicating corruption more effectively.”
He reminded new KPK leaders to be able to carry out the mandate given by people. “I hope the new KPK leaders can work in this new bulding with a new enthusiasm.”
