TEMPO.CO, Jakarta-For Japanese cuisine fans, you must be familiar with the term ramen. But did you know that the culture of eating ramen in Indonesia and its country of origin, Japan, slightly differs. Takashi Mikami, a chef and IPPUDO consultant, explained the cultural difference in eating ramen between the two countries.
Takashi said in Pacific Place on Wednesday, October 21, that if compared to the Indonesian people and most people in Southeast Asia, Japanese people have a unique tradition when eating ramen. This has become their standard way. Not just the order of the food that is different, but also the portion.
“The order is beverage, Japanese dumpling, and then ramen,” said Takashi. What’s certain is that most Japanese male will order kaidama or additional noodle. Besides noodle, sometimes Japanese people would add rice, as usually done by Japanese college students.
Amanda Sihombing, Marketing Manager IPPUDO Indonesia, said that Japanese people have the habit of leaving 60% of their ramen soup and then ordering kaidama to be added to the soup.
Surprisingly, the habit has a significant reason. Moris Hiroshi, Regional Marketing Manager IPPUDO Malaysia says the habit of eating excessive carbohydrate food is because Japanese people have the habit of walking. So, they will have enough energy to walk.
