TEMPO.CO, Palopo - The lengthy drought has taken its toll in Palopo, South Sulawesi as the city suffers from clean water crisis. Twenty percent of the total customers of the state-owned tap water operator (PDAM) in the city have not been receiving water supply for the past two weeks.
Palopo PDAM Director, Yasir said that the operator has taken step to deliver water in trucks for free of charge. The main source of water that supply PDAM, Yasir continued, is coming from Mungkajang River in Mungkajang Subdistrict. The river’s volume has been decreasing since the drought hit.
The decreasing river water volume has resulted in the shut down of three PDAM’s water treatment installation that leads to the decrease of the clean water supply to the customers.
Hadrawi, a resident of Salekoe Village, said he has to take water from the ground by pump for his family’s daily life. It is feared that this well will depleted too if the drought last longer.
