TEMPO.CO, Jakarta-The local government of Pekalongan, Central Java, have obliged its civil servant (PNS) to wear traditional clothing on the 15th of every month. Regional Secretary of Pekalongan Dwi Arie Putranto said on Sunday, October 18 that according to the Mayor Decree No.060/03798, government employees are mandatory to wear traditional clothing.
“The application to wear traditional clothing has been valid since October 15 2015. The purpose of wearing traditional clothing is to preserve the archipelago culture,” said Dwi Arie. The policy to wear traditional clothing, Dwi said, has been initiated during the National Batik Day on October 2 2015.
The local government has committed to participate in preserving and simultaneously appreciating cultural diversity. Government employees will be given the freedom to wear any traditional clothing from Solo, Yogyakarta, Pekalongan, Banyumas, and even outside of Java island.
“We welcome them to wear any traditional clothing from the archipelago,” said Dwi. The local government will tolerate civil servant working on fields, including Civil Service Police Unit, transportation department personnel, and electric repair personnel.
“This policy will also be adjusted with on-field conditions. Government employees working on field will not be required to wear traditional clothing. Office employees are mandatory to wear it,” Dwi said.
