Indonesia`s Efforts to Address Haze Problem Not Enough: Malaysia

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Malaysian government has urged the Indonesian Government to address haze problem more seriously, saying that the current plans in place will take too long to be effective.
“We are grateful for the measures, but we think it will take too long. Every day, there is still open burning carried out by farmers in Indonesia,” Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said as quoted by New Strait Times on Sunday, October 04, 2015.
Zahid positively welcomed the commitment shown by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo to strengthen mitigation actions and efforts to prevent forest and land fires.
“We know that there are measures being taken but it is not enough. This happens every year. Already, we are spending too much on medical expenses, especially for those with problems such as asthma,” Zahid added.
Malaysian National Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tunku Jaafar had been sent to negotiate with the Indonesian government to on strategic steps to address the problem that occurs every year.
