TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Rina Emilda, the wife of KPK investigator Novel Baswedan, said that she was not surprised at the arrest of her husband by the National Police’s Crime Investigation Directorate (Bareskrim).
“We have discussed the possibility. We were ready,” Rina told Tempo on Friday, May 1, 2015.
According to Rina, Novel has explained the case entangling him and asked Rina to anticipate an arrest anytime. When Bareksrim arrested Novel, Rina immediately called his lawyer, as instructed by Novel.
Novel was arrested on Friday, May 1, 2015, around 12 a.m. by 13 police officers showing an arrest warrant signed by National Police’s director of general crime unit Herry Prastowo on April 24, 2015. Novel was charged with physical abuse causing heavy injuries against a swift nest burglar to extract information or confession.
The case was reported by Yogi Haryanto on February 14, 2004 in Bengkulu when Novel served as the head of crime unit at Bengkulu Police. Novel reportedly shot and tortured the suspect.
The case was processed by the local police, but has always resurfaced every time the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) and the National Police were at loggerheads.
