TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo said that it will respond to Philippine President Benigno Aquino's request to grant clemency for death row convict, Mary Jane Veloso, after a consultation with the Attorney General's Office (AGO).
"I have told [President Aquino] that I will respond to the clemency request on Monday evening," said Jokowi upon arriving at Halim Perdanakusumah Airport after a visit to Malaysia to participate in the official launch of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit.
At the opening of the ASEAN Summit, Jokowi met with President Aquino, who delivered the clemency request himself in person.
"I will consult AGO on the matter, and I will call President Aquino himself, or the Philippines' Secretary for Foreign Affairs, who will convey my response to President Aquino," said Jokowi.
With regards to allegations that the panel of judges involved in the Bali Nine trial were unjust in delivering the sentences, the President said that such claims should have been made years ago. "My answer on the matter is firm - it should've been communicated years ago," said Jokowi.
