Govt Reviews Mining Permits in 3 Provinces

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources will review mining permits (IUP) in three provinces: East Kalimantan, South Sumatra and West Kalimantan. Based on local governments' reports, the three provinces are considered to be the most problematic in the mining industry.
"The review will be conducted jointly with respective provincial governments," Energy Ministry spokesman Abdul Rahman Saleh told Tempo yesterday.
Central Kalimantan Governor A. Teras Narang has ordered 14 regents and mayors to revoke 250 IUPs issued by the local government. The number accounts for some 45 percent of Central Kalimantan's total IUPs issued.
"I will sign the warrant revocation on Friday next week," said Narang.
Ladjiman Damanik, executive director of the Indonesian Mineral Businesses Association, supports the government's decision. However, Ladjiman also asks the central government to tighten regulations by sending instructors to mining locations. The industry currently has only 104 instructors, a number he said is too small compared to the thousands of mining businesses operating in Indonesia.
