TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Started from the concern that no existing Indonesian super hero figure is known to children, Shani Budi Pandita created Nusantaranger that will be joining the 2014 Asian Popular Culture Convention (Asia Popcon) in SMESCO Exhibition Hall on September 19-21.
Nusantaranger is an online comic that tells the story about five Indonesian youth who were given special powers.
The five youth who came from five large islands in Indonesia must battle against Kelana, an evil entity who wants to conquer Marcapada.
"First I felt concerned about the lack of figure that can become a role model for the children of Indonesia," Shani Budi Pandita, founder of Nusantaranger, said in a statement.
"America has figures such as Superman, Batman, Spiderman. Japan also has a lot, so Nusantaranger tries to make an appearance to fill that void," Shani said.
Those five characters are Rangga Wira Prakoso (red), Kanaya Meuthia (yellow), Rimba Kala Manthana (green), George Saa (blue), dan Renata Mokoginata (black).
"We apply the Power Rangers format to describe the spirit of mutual assistance and togetherness," he said.
Other figures besides Nusantaranger who will be displayed in the 2014 Asian Popcon are Mahardika, Pionicon, Slendang7, Gatot Kaca, Adit sopo Jarwo, and also Pendekar Tongkat Mas (Golden Staff Warrior).
