TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Corruption Eradication Commisison (KPK) on Monday probed Anggito Abimanyu, a former director general for hajj and minor hajj at the Religious Affairs Ministry, as a witness for former religious minister Suryadharma Ali.
The Hajj fund corruption has led to Anggito as, based on Tempo’s sources, he returned some kickbacks he received related to his duty as the ministry's director general for hajj and minor hajj to the KPK.
“Anggito returned hundreds of millions of cash to the KPK when he was investigated,” said the source.
The KPK has also secured information on the ministry's officials that often bring along their family members in hajj trips. Anggito allegedly included his wife, Arma Latief Abimanyu, in the ministry's hajj pilgrimage and listed her as one of its hajj staffers, although she is not.
KPK investigators have searched Anggito’s office, which is located on the ministry's first floor, and confiscated his cell-phone and some documents. On May 30, Anggito resigned from his position in light of Surydharma Ali's decision to step down after being named suspect by the KPK on May 22.
