TEMPO.CO, Bekasi - Abraham Samad, the current chief of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), has been said to be the most ideal running mate for Jakarta Governor Joko “Jokowi” Widodo in July’s presidential race due to his relentless efforts in battling corruption.
Budiman, a political expert with the Indonesian Concept (Konsepindo) Research and Consulting, said Abraham’s achievement in the nation’s legal sector had caused people to put him at the same level as Jokowi.
The rector of State Islamic University (UIN) Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, Professor Komaruddin Hidayat, seconded the opinion. He said law enforcement was the main issue the nation must face at the moment. "Future leaders are expected to focus on it," he said.
Komarudin said Abraham Samad was a reliable character in the law enforcement sector. “He dares reveal mega-corruption scandals, such as the Hambalang case, which then involved an active minister. And the latest was the arrest of the recently-retired chief of the Supreme Audit Agency (BPK), Hadi Poernomo" he said.
Komaruddin added future leaders should be able to address issues besetting the country, including its development and economy. "If future leaders fail to manage all of these properly, they can be toppled," he said.
Jokowi National Secretary Eva K. Sundari, meanwhile, said one of the main requirements for being the Jakarta governor’s running mate was high electability. "Sound political communication and technocratic management skills to support the presidential system are also among the primary considerations," she said.
