TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - PT Inti's Manager of Monitoring and Control System Socialization, Andi Nugroho, revealed that the realization of radio frequency identification (RFID) to monitor fuel oil consumption in Jakarta is unsatisfactory. Until March 11, the device had been installed on about 290,000 cars from the targeted 4.5 million.
"The percentage is only about five percent," he told Tempo yesterday.
Andi said public's enthusiasm over the RFID installment this year has declined compared to last year due to the public's unawareness about the dissemination of the fuel monitoring and control system. The device supplies for Jakarta are ready, said Andi.
To address the problem, PT Inti has been approaching the public by establishing booths at shopping malls and public areas, in addition to those at gas stations. Andi said 45 RFID booths have been active in Jakarta.
Oil and gas analyst from Center for Petroleum and Energy Economics Studies, Kurtubi, suggested the government to terminate the RFID project,ng the project is not a solution to discourage subsidized fuel consumption.
"RFID is a device to 'spy' on public’s oil consumption," he told Tempo yesterday. Fuel quota system will shackle public’s economic activities, he added. The device would also have to be installed on tens of millions of cars in Indonesia.
"Forgive me for saying this, but it’s a herculean task," said Kurtubi. As a solution, he suggested the government to accelerate the energy conversion program.
