TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - West Jakarta Police is set to go ahead with the contraflow system implemented on Jl. Tomang West Jakarta, which connects Jakarta with Tangerang. Since the tryout on Dec 5, police have recorded the decline in traffic congestion on the street up to 34 percent.
"Points of traffic congestion that often take place at Kembangan, Meruya and Kebon Jeruk toll gates could be eased," said Deputy Head of Traffic Division of West Jakarta Police, Commissioner Budiono, Friday.
The contraflow system or allowing vehicles to move to the opposite direction was opened at KM 6+200 or at Karang Tengah tollgate until KM 00+200 in Tomang. When it was first tried out, Budino reported there were around 2,500 vehicles passing through the contraflow lane. However, on the fifth day of the tryout, Friday, the number has increased into almost 5,000 vehicles.
When passing through the contraflow lane, the drivers must turn on the main lights of the car and must not turn on the hazard lamp. "When it's raining or cloudy, the contraflow system will not be applied to ensure the safety of the drivers," Budiono explained.
Police are expected to implement the contraflow scheme every working day, starting from 6 am until 9 pm, depending on the condition of the traffic. In addition, the contraflow scheme will also be implemented up to Jl. Biak or at the exit tollgate of Tomang heading to Harmoni. "We will add around 350 traffic cones to extend the contraflow scheme on Monday, December 23," said Budiono.
