TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Fifteen Japanese companies will invest US$3.5 billion or approximately Rp41.9 trillion. According to Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) Chief, Mahendra Siregar, the investment will be carried out within the period of 1.5 years. “This has established Indonesia’s position as Japan’s main investment destination,” he said at his office yesterday.
Mahendra said the commitment was made during President Susilo Bamabang Yudhoyono’s visit to Japan not too long ago. All those organizations have previously invested in Indonesia. Therefore, the investment this time is an expansion on existing businesses, in both production and services.
Besides collaboration in investment, Indonesia and Japan have signed a bilateral swap agreement (BSA). This has increased the swap value from US$12 billion to US$22.76 billion.
According to Bank Indonesia Governor, Agus Martowardojo, the collaboration has a very positive impact on Indonesia to deal with future economic turbulences. “The BSA shows Japan and Indonesia’s commitment to maintain regional economic stability,” he said.
