TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The market value for the national pharmacy industry is projected to double, or even triple, following the National Health Insurance (JKN) program, which will begin on January 1, 2014, said chairman of the Indonesian Pharmaceutical Companies Association, Johannes Setijono.
"The market value of the pharmaceutical industry in 2012 reached Rp47 trillion. And in the next five to six years, it could double or triple," he said on Thursday.
Johannes explained it would take at least four years before the market value will increase as the industry will require time to construct new factories.
Johannes said that out of that Rp47 trillion, 70 percent is still dominated by domestic factories "despite 24 world class pharmacy companies setting up shop in Indonesia" while adding that the "national pharmacy industry still managed to come out on top."
Based on data from the association, there are currently 215 pharmacy companies in Indonesia comprising of state-owned firms, private national firms and international firms.
