TEMPO.CO, Sydney - Sydney Morning Herald reported that Australia has taken part in the global spy network, along with its ally the United States. Fairfax Media confirmed that Australia have been using its embassies in Asian countries, including in Jakarta, Bangkok, Hanoi, Beijing, and Dili, to spy on phonecalls and private data.
Based on information collected from Edward Snowden, the Australian Embassy in Jakarta is suspected of playing a great role in gathering intelligence concerning terrorism and human trafficking. Surprisingly, most of the Australian diplomats were not even aware of the operation codenamed 'STATEROOM' that managed to tap into radio and other communication devices.
Der Speigel reported that the spy facility in the Australian Embassy was running a covert operation by using tapping devices hidden in a specific compartment in the building.
Even worse, a leak on Indonesia's confidential reports on the 1999's Timor Leste incident, indicated that Australian intelligence possessed a wide access to both military and civil information in Indonesia.
