TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa requested the United States to clarify issues regarding the presence of spying and tapping devices in the US embassy in Jakarta.
"We have spoken to the representative of the embassy and now awaits for official statement from the US government," the Minister said.
Marty said that if tapping devices are indeed present, the United States will be considered of conducting violations against national security and diplomacy ethics.
Information on the presence of tapping device was obtained when Edward Snowden leaked a secret map of 90 phone-tapping facilities owned by the United States spread around the globe. The map was published by German magazine Der Spiegel and Sydney's Morning Herald. Some of the markers in the map shows Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Pnom Penh, and Yangon.
The map, which was dated August 13, 2010, listed spy facilities located in US ally countries including, Australia, New Zealand, England, Japan, and Singapore. Der Spiegel reported that the operation involved two major intelligence agencies, namely the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and the National Security Agency (NSA).
