TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Schools, government offices, and many private companies were closed for two consecutive day as torrential rain caused flooding throughout Philippine's capitol city, Metro Manila, yesterday. Meanwhile, hundreds of residents were forced to sought shelter at evacuation centers.
Previously, the government had issued an early warning and asked its citizens to remain cautious. "We've tried to save some of our belongings, but the floods came all of the sudden," said J.R. Pascual, who lived in middle class district of Cavite, a coastal area located approximately 15 kilometers from the heart of Manila.
Philippine's private TV station, ABS-CBN, broadcasted images of people standing on top of their rooftops because the flood had swept their houses in just a matter of seconds.
The Philippine's National Disaster Management and Mitigation Board stated that the country's northern region had been drowned by a 1.2 meters-deep flood. They predicted that the condition will worsen due to heavy monsoon rain that will continue until the end of week.
