TEMPO.CO, Surabaya - Despite of the new management, the barter practice is still ongoing in Kebun Binatang Surabaya (Surabaya Zoo) or KBS. Last night, the zoo sent 45 animals of its collections to Taman Hewan (Fauna Park) Pematang Siantar in North Sumatra. "We will send the animals tonight after tarawih prayer," Zoo Public Relation Officer, Agus Supangkat confirmed yesterday, July 12.

Agus said that the 16 kinds of the total 45 animals are 2 Bulls, 2 One-hump Camels, 3 Timorensis Deers, 4 Small Antelopes, 2 Sitatungas, 1 Mini hippopotamuses, 6 Hog Deers, 6 Kangaroos, 2 Sulawesi Monkeys, 3 Mantel Pigs, 2 Bilges, 2 Orangutans, 2 Kasuaris, 2 Banyan birds, 2 Yellow Crest Cockatoos, 2 large hippopotamuses, and 3 Balinese Starlings.

According to the PR officer, Surabaya Zoo will have a fauna museum at its complex in exchange, which is built by Pematang Siantar Fauna Park. "The construction is now in progress," he said, adding that all costs occurred by the shipping will be borne by Pematang Siantar Fauna Park.

KBS Animals and Cages Manager Penta said the collections that were being sent to Sumatra are overpopulated animals. This is also to reduce the population inside the cages so that it will not overpopulate. "If there are too many (animals inside a cage), it won’t be good for the animals," he said. Other than that, the animals being sent are also old animals.

Previously, KBS exchanged 39 animals with operational vehicles, a car and a motorcycle, to Banyuwangi Mirah Fantasia Fauna Park.
