TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Deputy Governor of DKI Jakarta, Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama, regretted that many street vendors who were invited and given space during the celebration of Jakarta's 486th Birthday littered the area. They failed to clean up their respective spaces.
"Around 95 percent of the street vendors were irresponsible," said Purnama at Jakarta City Hall on Tuesday. Purnama hoped that the vendors would be more responsible in oncoming events. "We are thinking to make them wear badges so that random sellers cannot just barge in and start selling."
That way, the city's vendors will be more filtered. Purnama said that around 70 percent of them are not citizens of the capital. "It's not a problem, but we must teach them local manners. If you want to come here, you don't litter."
The city's government stated that it would strive to give spaces for vendors in big events. It started during the Jakarta Fair event in Kemayoran, which was deemed to neglect street peddlers.
