INACA Unwilling to Comment on Merpati Air Over Poor Rating

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesia National Air Carrier Association (INACA) has questioned why Merpati Nusantara Airlines was listed in Skytrax's list of 20 of the world's worst airlines. "Why aren't other Indonesian airlines listed? Does that mean those other than Merpati are okay?" INACA Secretary General Tengku Burhanuddin told Tempo on Tuesday, May 28.
Burhanuddin said he does not know Skytax's parameters for judgment. Therefore, he would not comment on that matter. Burhanuddin said Merpati is not the only aircraft with financial issues. "All airlines, not only Merpati, have financial isses," said the secretary general.
However, Burhanuddin explained that the airline also has services issues because Merpati often cancelled its flights.
The Indonesian Ministry of Transportation's acting Air Transport Director, Djoko Murjatmodjo said Merpati is indeed facing difficult financial situations. The airline's existence will depend on its shareholders. "We don’t know if there will be additional funds," said Djoko.
