TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - State-Owned Enterprises Minister Dahlan Iskan said that PT Perkebunan Nusantara III is developing a power plant running on the excess gas produced by palm oil (CPO) mill belonging to the company. The plant is expected to begin operations in 2014.

"This is done to reduce carbon emissions, in accordance with government's program in 2010 to lower carbon emissions," the minister said at the office of Angkasa Pura 1, Thursday, May 16.

From PTPN III's factories located in North Sumatra, the excess gas can be converted into up to two megawatts of electricity. To one MW of power, at least 3,000 tons of palm oil is needed.

Last year, PTPN III reached its maximum production capacity of 720,000 tons of CPO. The company has 110,000 hectares of oil palm plantation area with an average production capacity of 24 tons per hectare.
