TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Food and Drugs Monitoring Agency (BPOM) announced and banned 17 comestics products produced by six cosmetic brands that contain dangerous substances, including hydroquinone, mercury, and retinoic acid.
The products were banned because it did not fulfill three standards stipulated by BPOM, including safety standards, benefit standards, and quality standards.
Head of BPOM Lucky S. Slamet stated that in 2013, many cosmetics products have been listed as either illegal or contain dangerous substances.
"This happened because cosmetics sellers can sell their products freely without specific monitoring," he said in his office, Monday, May 13.
The Director of Licences and Certifications for Traditional Drugs, Cosmetics, and Complimentary Products of BPOM Sukiman Said Umar, stated that one of the hardest challenges is monitoring cosmetic products sold through online media.
"We couldn't locate the location, we couldn't examine the products, unlike selling beauty cliniques and salons,” he said.
Sukiman explained, to monitor online sellings, BPOM have been working together with the Ministry of Communication and Informtion. BPOM also works hand in hand with the Provincial Health Office when issuing business permits.
