TEMPO.CO, Jayapura - Greenpeace plans to visit Papua on Thursday, May 9, on their newest ship, the Rainbow Warrior III. The arrival of this environmental organization is aimed at urging the Indonesian government, especially the Papua and West Papua administration, to issue forest protection regulations. They are also demanding local industries to be aware and environmentally friendly.
The Rainbow Warrior’s tour on Papua Island will begin in Jayapura City on May 9 to 11, then Manokwari city, Raja Ampat district and Sorong district in West Papua from May 16 to 18. Afterwards, the ship will move on to Beno, Bali, on May 31 until June 1 and finally rest in Jakarta from June 7 to 10.
The new Rainbow Warrior, which was launched in October 2011, is the first ship that is designed and created especially for Greenpeace to use as a vehicle for environmental campaigns. This ship is funded by individual Greenpeace supporters across the globe.
"This year, Rainbow Warrior will be in Indonesia to launch Greenpeace Indonesia’s new ocean campaign and also to support President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s commitment to protecting Indonesian forests and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by up to 26 percent by 2020," stated Greenpeace Indonesia spokesperson Hikmat Soeriatanuwijaya.
