East Java Struck by M 6.3 Earthquake, No Tsunami Warning

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A magnitude of 6.3 on Richter Scale earthquake struck Indonesia’s Eastern region of Situbondo and Bali earlier this morning at 01:57 Western Indonesian Time (WIB) with reports of three deaths and several houses damaged. Fortunately, the category-medium earthquake did not trigger any tsunami warning.

According to National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, the three reported deaths came from the region of Prambanan Village, Gayam, Sumenep. The earthquake, he said, was mainly felt by almost every region in East Java from Situbondo, Probolinggo, up to Surabaya.

Sutopo said that the deaths were mainly caused by the fact that the quake happened when residents were sleeping.

Furthermore, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that the earthquake`s epicenter originated from 55 kilometers off of Situbondo City’s coastline in East Java, at the depth of 12 kilometers.
