Raja Ampat Eyeing to be World`s Model for Marine Conservation

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The management of Raja Ampat conservation area in Papua was recently lauded by countries joined in the Coral Triangle Initiative on Coral Reefs, Fisheries, and Food Security (CTI-CFF) after the members held a meeting regarding the world`s coral triangle.
According to Andi Rusandi, Maritime and Fisheries Ministry’s Director of Conservation, the CTI-CEF meeting discussed marine conservation areas in each member’s area especially the world coral triangle.
The workshop saw each country present their concept upon the management of conservation to a panel in order to find a more effective management system.

Representatives of the marine protected area working group (MPAWG) were then taken to conservation area of Raja Ampat District.
The CTI-CEF representatives were introduced to local residents that revealed how the conservation area was managed, both by the government and cultural society. Andi said that the representatives showed interest to adopt the same method that the people at the Raja Ampat District practiced.
“Our hope is to have the Raja Ampat District conservation, which is the world’s coral triangle, become a model area for other countries in the world,” said Andi Rusandi.
