Jokowi Announces Maruf Amin as His VP Candidate in 2019 Election

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko `Jokowi` Widodo officially announced the Indonesia Ulema Council (MUI) chairman Maruf Amin as his vice presidential candidate in the 2019 Presidential Election. The announcement was delivered at Plataran Menteng restaurant, Jakarta, Thursday evening, August 9.
“After serious consideration and based on suggestions from all communities, I decide –agreed by the working coalition party– to name Prof. Dr. KH. Ma’ruf Amin as a vice presidential candidate,” said Jokowi at the restaurant, Jakarta, Thursday, August 9.
Jokowi considered Maruf as an experienced figure. “Ma’ruf Amin born in Tangerang, on March 11, 1943, is a wise religious figure.”

“He [Maruf Amin] was the Regional Legislative Council (DPRD) speaker, the House of Representatives (DPR) speaker, the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) speaker, a member of the Presidential Advisory Council (Wantimpres), a supreme leader (rais aam) of Nadhlatul Ulama, and chairman of Indonesian Ulema Council. In relation to the nationality, Prof. Dr. KH. Ma’ruf Amin also the advisor of BPIP,” Jokowi explained.
Jokowi further said he would register his name along with Maruf Amin as presidential and vice presidential candidate to the General Election Commission on Friday, August 10.
