TEMPO.CO, Tangerang - Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show, or GIIAS 2018, was officially opened by the President Joko Widodo or Jokowi on Thursday, August 2. In his remarks, Jokowi mentioned there were three challenges in the global automotive industry.

First is the increasingly widespread phenomenon of electric cars, “This is a phenomenon that starts with Tesla electric cars. Tesla was once a rare item of exotic goods, but now more countries are adopting electric cars,” said Jokowi in his opening remarks at GIIAS 2018.

Second is the autonomous vehicle, “A vehicle that can drive itself and the online transportation applications such as Gojek and Grab. With the autonomous vehicle, we must redefine what a car is,” said Jokowi.

The third is the short-term risk, “We have to study the automotive cycle that may have peaked especially in great markets. The automotive industry has a cycle that is very sensitive to the existing economic cycle,” explained Jokowi.

Jokowi explained that Indonesia should be ready to face this condition if the cycle of the automotive world decline in the coming years. According to him, we are still optimistic that our market is a great market. Indeed, he always said the automotive industry should continue to be driven by the export market.

“Moreover, the automotive industry is in a great economy. The second largest sector position in the manufacturing industry and the top five in the industrial sector,” Jokowi said during the GIIAS 2018.
