TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Deputy Governor Sandiaga Uno said the city administration through Food Station Tjipinang Jaya is set to import 10,000 tons of garlic from China in a bid to secure its price and stock until the year`s end.

Sandiaga Uno explained the import was aimed to fulfill 50 percent of commodity distribution in Jakarta. The city official suggested the import to Trade Ministry and Agriculture Ministry since the recent increase of garlic’s price and the supply was also stagnant.

“We’ve initiated to import [garlic] and coordinated with Agriculture Ministry so the community can purchase it at an affordable price,” Sandiaga said on Friday, July 6.

The CEO of Food Station Tjipinang Jaya Arief Prasetyo Adi confirmed some 10,000 tons of garlic will be imported until December 2018. The company had previously obtained the Horticultural Product Import Recommendation (RPIH) amounted to 20,000 tons from the ministry.

According to Sandiaga Uno, the import will start to arrive from China in July 2018 at 290 tons. Earlier, the garlic price reached Rp66,200 per kilogram by the end of the first quarter this year. The government expected the price would set in some Rp25,000 per kilogram.
