TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The lawyer hopes Aman Abdurrahman, who is charged with masterminding five terrorist attacks, will not be sentenced to death. The death sentence demanded by the prosecutors deemed as inappropriate because it was not supported by the facts in the trial.
“The witnesses in the court did not say that Aman involved in Thamrin bombing and others,” said lawyer Asludin Hatjani when contacted on Tuesday, June 19.
According to Asludin, the prosecutor's indictment, which called Aman, the mastermind of terrorist acts, was not proven in the facts of the trial. Asludin said the witnesses could not reveal that Aman was the one who commanded the terror that alleged to him.
Besides Thamrin Bombing, Aman was also charged with the bomb attack in Kampung Melayu, East Jakarta; in the Church in Samarinda, East Kalimantan; assault on North Sumatra Police Station, as well as the attack on police in Bima, West Nusa Tenggara.
"But no court evidence leads to it (Aman as the mastermind of bombing terror)," said Asludin.
That is why Asludin expected the judges to sentence Aman with a lighter punishment than life imprisonment. The plan, the verdict hearing, will be conducted on Friday, June 22.
Previously, the prosecutor demanded Aman Abdurrahman with the death penalty. The lawsuit refers to two charges namely violating Article 14 juncto Article 6 and Article 15 juncto Article 7 of Law No. 15 of 2003 concerning the Eradication of Criminal Acts of Terrorism.
The prosecutors said that the concept of shari'a law and ideology of takfir, the accusation of fellow Muslims, embraced by Aman has encouraged his followers to commit terror. As a result, the lives of some people float in vain.
In TEMPO magazine, May 14-20, 2018 edition, a special detachment 88 officer also mentioned the central role of Aman in the Indonesian Jamaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD) group. The group is committed to the banned Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).
Aman Abdurrahman is mentioned as a great leader in the eyes of his former students, both of whom received the education outside as well as in prison.
"If Aman Abdurrahman says he does not like a person, this can be interpreted as a command for his followers to kill the person," said the 88 Densus officials.
