TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Setya Novanto is stripped off of all political rights for five years after he is proven to be guilty of corruption practices in the electronic ID card (e-KTP) graft case.

“The court hands additional criminal sentence by striping him off of his (Setya Novanto) right to occupy any public office for five years, immediately effective after Setya undergoes his sentencing,” said Judge Yanto at the Corruption Court today, April 24.

Previously, the panel of judges handed Setya a five-year sentence and an additional fine of Rp500 million for his involvement in the e-KTP graft case.

According to Judge Franky Tambuwun, Setya was proven to have abused his authority as House of Representatives (DPR) Deputy Speaker in the e-KTP project. The project itself was introduced under the Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono administration.

However, Indonesia Corruption Watch’s networking division coordinator Abdullah Dahlan did not agree with the judge’s verdict of stripping Setya off of his political rights.

“Such verdicts will still open the opportunity for Setya Novanto to get himself actively involved as a politician, even if it’s not in the current associated political party,” said Abdullah today.
