TEMPO.CO, Purbalingga - President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo led Monday the groundbreaking ceremony of the Jenderal Besar Soedirman Airport in Purbalingga, Central Java. According to plans, the airport construction—particularly its runway—will proceed in two stages.
In the initial stage, the Transportation Ministry in tandem with state-owned airport operator PT Angkasa Pura II will extend the runway from the present 850 meters to 1,600 meters. The runway will also be widened to 2,500 meters in the second stage.
The airport will boast a terminal measuring 3,000 square meters able to accommodate 300,000 passengers annually.
“We hope that this airport will bring benefits, not only to Purbalingga, but also to the adjacent 9 regencies and municipalities, viz. Banjarnegara, Kebumen, Banyumas, Pemalang, Tegal, Brebes, Tegal municipality, and Wonosobo,” Jokowi said after inspecting the airport’s construction in Purbalingga on Monday, April 23, 2018.
Jokowi also hoped the presence of the airport would trigger the emergence of economic spots in the area.
