TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia will hold a trial on the 5G network during the Asian Games event in August 2018. Director General of Resources and Equipment of Post and Information Technology of the Ministry of Communication and Informatics Ismail, stated that the public can use the 5G network at the location of 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta.
"In Jakarta, first," said Ismail after launching the commercial software 5G Radio Access Network (RAN) at the Four Seasons Hotel on Tuesday, April 17, 2018.
Ismail said that Telkomsel has been appointed as the service provider to build 5G network during the 2018 Asian Games. People who want to test the 5G network must buy a new Telkomsel SIM card. Furthermore, Ismail explained that there are three spectrums of the 5G network, which is 3.5 gigabytes, 26 gigabytes, and 28 gigabytes.
"This is just a trial, it's not yet commercial," said Ismail.
According to Ismail, the government's target is to prevent Indonesia from being left behind by other countries. Therefore, Indonesia needs to participate as a global player in building the 5G network.
Building the 5G network cannot be separated from the 4G network system. Both the 4G and 5G networks are sustainable networks and Indonesia does not necessarily to immediately switch to 5G network and leave the 3G or 4G network.
