TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) prosecutor demanded former House of Representatives Speaker Setya Novanto to be sentenced to 16 years in prison fined with Rp1 billion for committing a corruption crime in the electronic identity card (e-KTP) procurement project.
“[We] request the panel of judges of the Corruption Court at the Central Jakarta District Court to decide that defendant Setya Novanto has been proven guilty of committing a corruption crime,” said Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) prosecutor Abdul Basir when reading out the charges at the Corruption Court on Thursday, March 29.
Setya has been charged with illegally taking money amounting to US$7.3 million and acquiring Richard Mille watch worth US$135,000 dollars from the e-KTP project budget.
Setya was charged based on the second indictment of Article 3 of Law No. 31/1999 as amended by Law No. 20/2001 on the Eradication of Corruption in conjunction with Article 55 (1) of the Criminal Code.
In addition, the KPK prosecutor demanded Setya to return the money that he received amounting to US$7,435 million. Earlier, Setya had returned Rp5 billion of the total amount. The money shall be paid to the KPK no later than a month after a verdict is issued.
The KPK prosecutor also called for the revocation of Setya Novanto's political rights for a certain period of time.
“The defendant's right to serve a public office must be revoked for five years after serving his sentence,” the persecutor said.
