5 Facts about Katulampa Dam

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - In the rainy season, Katulampa Dam in Bogor became the center of attention for Jakarta`s residents, like what happened on Monday, February 5, when the rain fell heavily.

Heavy rainfall will increase the water level. If it reaches 220 centimeters, the status will be raised to 'standby' and within hours later, Jakarta will be flooded.

Here are some facts about the Katulampa Dam.

1. The Dutch Heritage

Katulampa dam is the Dutch colonization heritage. The major event behind its creation was the big flood that hit Jakarta in 1872. It was made by Ir. Hendrik van Breen, a civil engineering professor in Air Technische Hoogeschool te Bandoeng, Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB).

The construction cost 80,000 guilders (gulden) and was inaugurated on October 11, 1912, by the Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies Alexander Willem Frederik Idenburg.

2. Function

Katulampa Dam aims to give early warning of the water that flows to Jakarta and also as the land irrigation on its right and left sides. The function is also as an early information system to Ciliwung River’s flood alert that will enter Jakarta.

3. Popularity

Katulampa Dam became popular when Jakarta was flooded in 2001. Jakarta’s residents thought that it could hold a lot of water. Thus, when there was an issue of its damaged, they were very afraid of the flood.

4. Renovation

In 2004, for the first time, the Katulampa Dam was renovated. The fund spent was Rp300 million from West Java regional budget. It was equipped with supporting facilities such as river basin control, bridge, and the trunk measuring device (to record the rainfall).

5. Center of People's Attention

The 74-meter concrete building was also visited by many people and officials. It often made the government wary.

Recently, when Katulampa Dam's status was on standby 1, Bogor Mayor Bima Arya Sugiarto observed the condition on Monday, 5 February. He also informed the status of the dam's water level through video and asked people to not go outside to anticipate the flood.
