TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Melon is South Korea’s largest online music store, and their awards honour the success and achievements of K-pop artists.

The awards, which took place at Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul, South Korea on 2nd December, book-ended the K-pop awards season, a matter of weeks before the New Year. The seven-piece boy band won the award for track, Spring Day.

Overall, the group claimed four gongs, the others being the Global Artist Award, Top 10 Award and Best Music Video Award for track, DNA.

BTS took home the Best Album of the Year award in 2016 for their album, The Most Beautiful Moment In Life: Young Forever. The group have made headlines in the Western world recently, as K-pop gains momentum outside of Asia. The band made their US debut at the American Music Awards, and were delighted with the response. “The AMAs didn’t treat us as a curious novelty from Asia, but showed us respect and treated us as an important part of the show,” said member RM.

“They put our performance right before Diana Ross, and we were introduced by the Chainsmokers, who are very popular in the United States. It was clear in many ways that they knew a lot about us and had prepared for our appearance for a long time”.

“It’s been less than a year since all our members hugged and cried [over their first daesang, a Korean music award], and yet we were able to win an award at the Billboard Music Awards and perform at the AMAs in the time since. We’ve come so far so fast, it’s hard to believe; it amazes me,” Jin from the group added. The group recently became the first K-pop group to get over 10 million followers on Twitter.
