TEMPO.CO, Paris - The 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris could be a great event for video game competitions. The president of the Paris Olympic Tender Committee told the Associated Press that the discussions will be held with people from competitive video game circles and the International Olympic Committee to discuss the prospects of gamers competing for Olympic gold.
Tony Estanguet, president of the French Tender Committee, told the AP that the video game community deserves to be at least part of the discussion. "We have to look at it because we can't say, 'It's not us. It's not about Olympics,'" Estanguet said, as quoted by Gamespot, Tuesday, August 8, 2017.
"I do not want to say 'no' from the beginning," he added. "I think it's interesting to interact with the IOC, with them, the eSports family, to better understand the process."
Paris has not been officially announced as the host of the 2024 Olympics, but it is expected to be confirmed in September. Los Angeles was recently selected to host the event in 2028 instead of 2024.
In 2014, Blizzard's former creative chief officer, Rob Pardo, said there was an excellent argument for video games to be part of the Olympics. "I think the way you see eSports is that it's a bunch of very competitive skills and quick reflexes and the players have to make very quick decisions," he said.
