TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Bank Indonesia (BI) Executive Director for Communication Tirta Segara assured that the central bank’s Real Time Gross Settlement (BI-RTGS), Scripless Securities Settlement System (BI-SSSS) and the national clearing system (SKNBI) are operating normally or unaffected by WannaCry ransomware that hit a number countries, including Indonesia.
The ransomware attacks PCs by locking it or encrypting all files stored in it making them inaccessible. “As of yesterday, RTGS and clearing banks have yet to report that their system was hit by the malware attack, we have also checked it,” he said yesterday in Jakarta.
Tirta noted that Bank Indonesia has anticipated the attack by updating the system with the latest antivirus software and patches for Windows.
Moreover, Tirta also said that the central bank encourages RTGS and clearing banks to update their system and take similar precautionary measures. He said that BI counter-parties who are connected to its system must also upgrade their antivirus with the latest version.
Tirta said that the central bank has temporarily disabled its internet access in computers or individual servers, as well as those related to the system and transactions. “We have blocked outgoing traffic; knowing that everything is running well and having upgraded [the system] with the latest antivirus, we have re-connected it,” he said.
Pressed on the malware threat, Tirta said that there have been no reports of financial loss. “There are none since transaction continues; all are still normal.”
