  • TEMPO.CO, Depok - Police chief General Tito Karnavian said that Indonesia was facing big social conflict problem and primordialism that could lead to disintegration.

“The current situation is potential to cause disintegration. Social conflict is the primary concern of the National Police; it has to be tackled,” the police chief said in his general lecture at the University of Indonesia Tuesday, April 25.

Tito said that Indonesia’s diversity is a national treasure. On the other hand, diversity could lead to division.

He said that primordial issue was one of the highlights of the recent elections. Indonesia is facing an internal threat in light of such issues. “So far, I see that the Indonesian people are capable of preserving [unity in] diversity,” said Tito.

In addition, the police chief said that the country was formed regardless of differences and is home to many ethnicities, religions, and race. The commitment to unity had been expressed since the Youth Pledge (Sumpah Pemuda) and the declaration of independence.

“So, don’t let [identity] politics come into play,” police chief Tito Karnavian said. “Doing so will mean a setback for democracy, we want to move forward.”
