TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - As many as 43 buildings in three subdrictricts of Sampang, Madura Island, East Java Province, were damaged as it was hit by a tornado on Saturday evening (18/3).
"The data of the number of the damage buildings are based on the latest report provided by Quick response Team (TRC) of Sampang Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPPD) up to Sunday at 12:35 Indonesia Western Time Zone," Head of Sampang BPPD Wisnu Hartono said.
He explained that seven buildings were severely damaged, and the remaining 36 buildings had minor and moderate damage. He added that the tornado that hit Sampang at 07:17 made 27 trees fall. As a result, it affected the electricity line and caused power outage to the city.
The electricity was back to normal on Saturday at 11:45. Wisnu also said that there were only two injured victims.
Quick Respose Team of BPBD Sampang along with Indonesian Military (TNI) and Police worked together to repair the houses with minor damage. They also cut down the fallen trees.
Wisnu Hartono also reminded the people to take precautions when the weather turns bad. He explained that according to The Meteorology, Clomatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), potential tornadoes are forecasted in the next few days.
