TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, also known as Ahok, said that the floods in several areas in South Jakarta were mainly caused by piles of garbage. Ahok argued that the South Jakarta area should have been free of floods.
"We cannot find out where the clog is, or whether we need to make the sewers larger. There haven't been floods [in South Jakarta] for a while now. But why it suddenly happened?" Ahok said on Thursday, March 2, 2017.
Ahok said the flood is mainly caused by piles of garbage. Similarly, the flood occurred in Kampung Pulo, East Jakarta, was also caused by clogged water pump.
Ahok said that he will not assume that the flood was the result of sabotage. Ahok however, did expresses his suspicion towards the constantly changing flood areas.
"[The flood] changes location. This is not normal. If it happens in one area, the problem would be apparent. We are currently investigating," Ahok said.
