TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Sultan Iskandar Muda International Airport in Aceh has won the title of World’s Best Airport for Halal Travellers in the World Halal Tourism Awards 2016. State-owned airport operator PT Angkasa Pura II (Persero) president director Muhammad Awaluddin said that the success has been achieved thanks to the internet users who participated in voting for the winner.
“As many as 1.89 million voters from 116 countries helped decide on the winner in 16 categories in the World Halal Tourism Awards,” Awaludin said yesterday in a press conference. The award of Best Airport for Halal Travellers is the very first for Indonesia. Last year’s winner was Abu Dhabi International Airport.
Sultan Iskandar Muda International Airport’s new passenger was unveiled by president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in 2010. In normal condition, the airport can serve 18 scheduled domestic flights and 4 scheduled international flights.
The award, Awaludin said, reflects Angkasa Pura II’s role in supporting the government to develop Aceh as halal tourist destination.
