TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Hendardi, Chairman of the Setara Institute said that President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo must take firm actions in responding to the Panama Papers document that contains names of several Indonesian public officials.
"The [Corruption Eradication Commission] and President Jokowi, who claimed to have validated the data contained in the documents must immediately take action," Hendardi said in a press released received by Tempo on Monday, April 25, 2016.
Hendardi asserted that President Jokowi must immediately take actions to prevent further political turmoil and to restore public trust in the government.
"Jokowi must clarify the truth about the involvement [of public officials in Panama Papers] and consider the possible political impacts," Hendardi said.
Two of Indonesian high-ranking officials named in the Panama Papers include Chief of the Supreme Audit Agency Harry Azhar Azis, and Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs. Both officials have denied clarified their involvement in the Panama Papers.
Regardless, Hendardi argued that both officials' involvement will certainly affect the public’s view of the government and lowered public confidence.
