TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Fredy Jayadi (45), one of the participants of the chicken eating competition organized by fast food retailer Kentucky Fried Chicken's (KFC), on Friday (11/3) died after he choked on a piece of chicken wing.
"When the incident happened, Fredy was taking part in the competition, which requires its participants to eat three chicken wings as fast as possible in five minutes. The competition offers a prize of up to Rp 5 billion," said Chief of the General Crime Unit of the Tangerang Resort Police Adj. Comr. Taufik Iksan to reporters.
The competition was held at a KFC outlet in Taman Semanan in Cengkareng, West Jakarta.
Taufik added that Fredy was competing with two other participants.
"Every participant was given three chicken wings and they have to eat them as fast as possible,” Taufik said, adding that the winner is the one who eats the chickens the fastest.
Taufik added that the incident happened when Fredy was finishing the third chicken wing and he suddenly chocked.
Fredy then drank water and was given first aids by the organizer, who also took him to the nearest clinic.
"However, when the doctor checked on him, he was already dead,” Taufik said, adding the police are now investigating the case.
Shortly after the incident, Fredy added, the police stopped the competition and put a police line around the outlet.
For the record, the organizer has held the competition since March 3 and as of now, KFC has not given comments on the incident.
