TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Speaking on the sidelines of the US-ASEAN Summit in California, US, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo said that it would need two or three years of preparations for Indonesia to join the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

Jokowi revealed that during his working visit to Washington DC in October last year, he had expressed his interest to join the TPP to US President Barack Obama.

“However, I need to clarify that it takes a long process; it could be two or three years,” Jokowi said as quoted by posted by the Cabinet Secretary website on Wednesday, February 17, 2016.

Jokowi explained that the government would first look at the European Union’s Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Jokowi added that several measures must be taken before deciding to join the TPP.

“The most important thing is being extra thorough in calculating the advantages and disadvantages [of joining the TPP] for the sake of the national interest,” Jokowi said.
