  • TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The people of Vatican will soon be able to have a glimpse of Indonesia. A museum that will display and promote Indonesia's pluralism and cultural diversity is currently being built in the city state, said Indonesian Ambassador to the Vatican Antonius Agus Sriyono.

During a visit to St Marys College in Jakarta on Wednesday, the ambassador said that the museum construction is estimated to be completed in early October 2016.

The museum will showcase a collection of Indonesian icons, including a miniature of the Borobudur Temple in Magelang, Central Java.

"Building a museum of Indonesia in the Vatican is the right step in terms of cultural diplomacy, which is now being done by Indonesia," Ambassador Sriyono said.

The Vatican is a small city-state of just 34 hectares. But no one can deny that it is a country with a very big influence on other countries in the world.

Ambassador Agus is also designing a religious tourism campaign to Larantuka on Flores Island, East Nusa Tenggara, which will be offered to some 5 million pilgrims who visit the Vatican every year.

"With an integrated effort among ambassadors, we hope to be able to attract Vatican pilgrims to travel to Larantuka; something which will help improve the area's economy," he said.
