Eight Banks Sign Green Pilot Project for Sustainable Finance

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Eight banks signed banking pilot project in international seminar held by the Financial Services Authority (OJK) at Grand Hyatt Jakarta on Monday, November 23.

The eight banks consist of six conventional banks, which are Bank Artha Graha Internasional,  Bank Central Asia,  Bank Negara Indonesia,  Bank Rakyat Indonesia,  Bank Mandiri,  BPD West Java and Banten, and two sharia banks, which are Bank BRI Syariah and Bank Muamalat.

OJK chairman Muliaman Hadad said the pilot project aims to support preparation of bank competencies for Sustainable Finance Roadmap in Indonesia in 2014-2019.

The competencies are the ability of organization in managing social and environmental aspects and governance in business decisions and increasing the portion of payment to business activities that are conducted continuously. “These eight banks represent 46 percent of national banking assets. They are the first batch,” he said.

Muliaman hoped that other banks and financial institutions will follow their footstep to start applying sustainable finance in Indonesia.

OJK held an international seminar called Sustainable Finance to Support Sustainable Development Goals on Monday in cooperation with several ministries and international institutions. The aim of the seminar is to direct sustainable financial sector programs to become solution to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The seminar was held in cooperation with the National Development Planning Ministry, the Finance Ministry, the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry, the Environment and Forestry Ministry and several international organizations, such as UNEP, Inquiry, WWF, GIZ, USAID and IFC.
