TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian men’s single shuttler Tommy Sugiarto cleared his way to the semifinal after defeating second-seeded Jan O Jorgensen from Denmark 21-19, 21-19 on Friday, October 16 local time. Tommy is set for semifinal clash against Taiwan’s Chou Tien Chen later today.
“I have faith to defeat the opponent since the beginning. But I played without burden and was ready for the worst. On the other hand, my opponent seemed to be under pressure to win as a representative of host country,” Tommy said in Odense, Denmark as quoted by PBSI Public Relation and Social Media team.
Tommy needed 42 minutes, claiming that the slow tempo is part of his strategy to tumble Jan O. Jorgensen. But the world’s number 12 also said that he had to suppress his opponent from developing his game.
Against the seventh seed Chou today, Tommy said he needs to keep his stamina fit because it would determine the result of the semifinal match. Statistic shows that Tommy won one out of four fixtures against Chou. Tommy had lost in their last three meeting including one in 2014 China Open.
